In San Francisco on this day in 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge, a suspension bridge that once boasted the longest main span in the world and that has been celebrated for the magnificence of its setting.
I have indeed witnessed this magnificent bridge on several occasions.
As mentioned many times I'm a bridge admirer from childhood. You see... my father's occupation was building bridges for Missouri roads. He taught me the admiration for these huge structures.
In fact one of my favorite motorcycle routes also includes Arkansas' "Lil Golden Gate Bridge" at Beaver Arkansas. It is a suspension bridge 554 feet long, but only 11 feet wide (only one car at a time!) this is a man-made wonder too.
At any rate the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is an A-list celebrity in the bridge world. Now 92 years old, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is arguably the most recognizable bridge in the world.
