I once heard a personal story that a friend of my shared in the 90s. He spoke about a friend of his that was dying in the hospital from AIDs. The friend spoke to him regarding a visit from his father.
While this young man lay dying in bed, his father came by the hospice and said to him with a look of disgust and disdain on his face, “Look at you, you have wasted your entire life” and he walked away.
When my friend came by to visit his dear friend, his friend related what had taken place and told him, “I have thought over what my father said, and have come to the conclusion that I have loved fiercely, have lived gently and have let go of things deeply, and that is enough for a life time.”
This story always struck me, I suppose because I have had a significant amount of abuse in my lifetime, and still I choose to love; and in the moments when I want to choose otherwise, I remember these words.
Although I could choose to be embittered and to be honest have in the past, I have chosen instead to love others and trust a few who I know care for me deeply.
And I do think that in the beginning, the middle, and the end—loving, living, and letting go are what makes life best.
