5/10/2024 Did You Know?

I'm squatting here in Phoenix, Arizona for a few days.

One thing that I've learned while here is really surprising to me.

As common as palm trees are in Phoenix, Az.

Believe it or not — with literally thousands of them scattered around the Valley...

You would think that they are native to Arizona – at least a few of them, right?

Even the Latin names of several species of palm trees include the word “Phoenix.”

Nope, for nearly all the palm trees in Phoenix, the answer is no, they’re not natives.

However, the Washington filifera (also known as the California fan palm, petticoat palm, or desert palm) is truly a native palm tree.

And it can only be found on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge between Quartzite and Yuma.

But the funny part is even those are thought to have come by coyote or bird droppings thousands of years ago.

So technically... They're transplants just like the others. 😂

Now that is clear as Mud...

I hope everyone has a fantastic day!
