8/16/2021 Getting The Heck Into Dodge...

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

We dodged the rain as we rode towards Dodge City, KS. A few stray droplet caught our attention but all was good by the time we reached town.

I tell you, Dodge is definitely a small and unique town. If you like the TV series Gun Smoke & movies, especially old western ones, this is the place for you.

Even if you are not into that, this is still a place that should be visited and explored. The town is fantastic and truly has something to marvel for all. The history & legends of the old West come alive.

We enjoyed the Historical Trolley Car Tour. Jim looked over "Doc" Holiday's cards. 😂

You can't forget aroma of the miles of Feed Lots here even today. There are approx 5,000 to 10,000 head of cattle processed daily. 😲 Lot of Steaks & Burgers for sure. However, actually they use every part of the cow down to the hide and bones.

The town had a wild history even with Fort Dodge being established in 1865.

Fort Dodge was a United States Army Post that protected those traveling the Santa Fe Trail and provided supplies and a resting place for traders and bison hunters.

The fort was abandoned in 1882. Eight years later, Fort Dodge was deeded to the state for use as a soldiers home. Today, it still serves this purpose as a retirement community and nursing facility for retired Kansas veterans. There is a historic library and self-guided walking tour that tell the fort's history to visitors. Uniquely many of the original buildings are still in use.

It was an absolutely fantastic day of history at it's best.
