Yesterday's adventure began at Gary Turner's Sinclair station. His daughter, Barbara & her husband George has a
recreation of his 1930 Sinclair gas station in it's prime. The site includes the original pumps and other memorabilia from the heyday of Route 66: The Mother Road.
My Grandson Lucas, my daughter & son in-law began this journey back through time with us.
Then it was onward to Coffeyville, Kansas to visit their Defender & History Museum.
On October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang tried to rob two banks in Coffeyville, Kansas, simultaneously. The gang was made up of Grat, Bob and Emmett Dalton; Bill Power and Dick Broadwell. As the gang crossed the plaza to enter the two banks, the Daltons were recognized by townspeople, who raised the alarm. Citizens armed themselves with weapons from nearby hardware stores and were ready for the gang when they tried to leave the banks. All robbers perished except Emmett Dalton at the hands of the town's defenders.
The family caravan moved onward to Laura Ingles Wilder's childhood home or rather a replica of the one-room cabin that was home to writer & family from 1869-1871.
I could not have asked for a better day for a ride and an educational adventure with my family.
After that point we rode off into the sunset smiling, leaving the kids to their own travels.
Memory making day! 😎
