We were in for a treat when we found Mississippi’s best-kept secret,
"Red Bluff," a true sense of “natural beauty” amongst its crumbling and destabilized earth's crust.
It can be a bit scarey too as it sits a few hundred yards off the Pearl River in south Mississippi’s lush country side.
Red Bluff is a natural jungle gym for those brave enough to asend down it's clay embankments. The Bluff is unmarked and unmanaged and free for its visitors to expolore.
The geological formation is still enlarging, having already eroded the original Mississippi Hwy. 587.
The state had to build a new highway a safe distance away. Today, the old Hwy. 587 ends in a barricade so as to save you from a jagged, cutoff highway that could have very well been in a post-apocalyptic movie. The bluffs are a majestic hues of red, orange and maybe purple.
Entering the bottom of Red Bluff can feel like experiencing another planet. The soil has the rusted colors and uneven terrain of Mars.
The largest town within a 20-minute drive is Columbia, Mississippi (population 6,000) where we found another Mississippi treasure. "Southern Fried Rabbit." A lil diner that specalizes fried rabbit. I added the yummy baked beans & fried orkra to compliment the hare.
Just another spectacular day in the South!
