1/26/2020 A Fort Too!

Gulf Islands National Seashore stretches for 160 miles along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi and Florida, and includes barrier islands, maritime forests, historic forts, bayous, and marine habitat.

So we decided to included another Fort into our repertoire... "Fort Pickens" was inside the National Park Seashore Drive as we drove along with noses almost pressed to the windows looking at the magnificent beauty.

"Fort Pickens" is a pentagonal historic United States military fort on Santa Rosa Island in the Pensacola, Florida, area. It is named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens.

The fort was completed in 1834 and was one of the few forts in the South that remained in Union hands throughout the American Civil War.

Fort Pickens was also of interest in World War II to the U.S. Navy, and it was decided that the defenses of the fort needed to be strengthened. A specific threat was German U-Boats, which were already operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

A wonderful day inspite of being turned away from the NAS entrance to Pensacola Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Before we could give our ID's we were told Military Only today. 😞

Coastal roaming at it's best!
