Thursday while I out for my motorcycle ride I stopped at a Historical Marker for the "The Butterfield Overland Mail Co."
The Butterfield Overland Mail Co. operated from 1858 to 1861 under contract with the U.S. Postal Department, providing transportation of U.S. mail between St. Louis, Mo., and San Francisco, Calif.
The route proposed by the Butterfield Mail Co. became known as the “Oxbow Route” because of its shape on a map, starting in St. Louis and then dipping southwesterly through Missouri, western Arkansas and the Indian Territory, turning west across Texas and southern New Mexico and Arizona, and then curving north again in California to finish at San Francisco.
Interesting fact is my house & property is within yards where the route ran along the bluff ridge of the Pomme De Terre River.
Interesting Tidbit...
My daughter, son in-law and I found a cave opening along the bluff that may have been a stopping place for rest, water and cooling off 15 miles north of Bolivar.
The cravings of names & dates on the cave wall matches this time frame.
Wow... You never think about how you might be in the vary spot where historical things transpired!
I would have loved to be transported through time to see how things were during the past.
Anyway... hope your present day is a good one!
