10/28/2023 Big Bird Is Here...

Well It's Possible!

Hey, I'm talking Pelicans... 😂

People usually associate pelicans with coastal areas, not Midwestern wetlands and lakes.

However, for a brief period each fall and spring, the migration of these large birds are found drawn to Missouri's waters like The Lake of the Ozarks. which is appealing to them with its wide open waters and abundant fish.

The pelican depends heavily on Missouri's lakes and rivers for places to rest and eat, gathering strength along the way.

Apparently small groups of "wandering" pelicans can go just about anywhere.

Missouri residents or visitors don't get to see young pelicans; rather it's adults, on their way to the nesting grounds of the Northern Midwest, Canada, and the Western states.

When hunting, White Pelicans work in groups to herd fish, rounding them up into tight schools, before scooping them up in their massive beaks.

White pelicans are even larger than their relative, the brown pelican, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Patuxent Bird Identification Center.

The white pelican measures 50 inches in length, with a wingspan of 110 inches.

Unlike brown pelicans, which dive into the water to catch fish, white pelicans fish while floating on the water.

Keep your eyes peeled... If you haven't already seen these massive birds this fall, you may see them anywhere including Lake Springfield during the next few weeks.

Have a fabulous day!
