11/24/2020 It goes on forever...

As we were driving long out of El Paso nearing Pecos we were left with the idea that this river by the same name passed through desolate but magical country.

The Pecos exits New Mexico just east of Red Bluff at 2,876 feet — the lowest point in altitude within the state. From there it slices across the projecting wing of West Texas to join the Rio Grande not far from the town of Langtry, where eccentric frontier Judge Roy Bean once presided. He styled himself “The Law West of the Pecos.”

Jim was reminded of the book titled Pecos Bill, the story of a wild, young cowboy who grew up on the Pecos River in West Texas. It became one of many favorites of young boys. Western novelists and Western filmmakers have always liked the name Pecos because it “sounds cowboy.”

A day of driving through the vast nothingness was painful at times. We are ready to go home to our rural homestead rich in lush vegetation and beauty. Our bones are weary and ache for our familiar bed.
