It just happened that Baby Face Nelson died on this day in 1934. Nelson had been severely wounded — hit by 17 bullets — in the FBI standoff.
Lester Joseph Gillis, also known as George Nelson and as Baby Face Nelson, was an American bank robber who became a criminal partner of John Dillinger, when he helped Dillinger escape from prison, in Crown Point, Indiana.
(Baby Face)
Our family has shares of stories over the years. One such story was my uncles, Lawrence and Floyd actually being picked up and jailed in Clinton, MO with suspicion of being Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd in the summer of 1934.
Uncle Shorty (Lawrence) was a very short 5'2 man whereas Uncle Floyd was a taller 6' ish attractive man who might be mistakenly identity together.
They persuaded the Henry County Sheriff to call thier mother's home to verify their identity. Grandma had my father (13 years old) to drive her to the sheriff's office.
All was finally settled that these men were indeed her son's. Then Uncle Floyd drove them all back home. However,
this story became a favorite dinner table conversation in my childhood.
