All the birds have flown up and gone;
A lonely cloud floats leisurely by.
We never tire of looking at each other –
Only the mountain and I.

As we traveled along the highway nearing Flagstaff, a beautiful beacon came into view, Humphreys Peak. It is the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet and one of the most scenic viewpoints in the San Francisco Peaks. On clear days hikers can see the Grand Canyon from the summit. The alpine forest trail is located just north of Flagstaff. This is a strenuous rocky trail with over 3,000 feet elevation gain. Hikers say Humphreys Trail is open year round but snow can make the hike difficult during the winter months. Since the snow cover and lack of signage can make navigation difficult, it is recommended that you use the phone app's recorder feature to avoid getting lost. First section in the woods is all rocks and roots, it is told to watch your knees and ankles on the way down (hiking poles highly recommended). At the top there are several false summits and a decent amount of loose rock. Up past the treeline is usually very windy and exposed, many use sunscreen. Afternoon storms are common in the late summer but we were sitting looking at this magnificent view in November. Snow is visible on the peaks. However, we have places to be before dark so onward we rolled but rejoiced at the opportune sight.
