From this history nerd... Do you know what the word casino means? Casino is of Italian origin; the root casa means a house. The term casino may mean a small country villa, summerhouse, or social club.
The first casinos or gambling houses appeared in Italy in the 17th century; The Ridotto was established in Venice in 1638 to provide a controlled gambling environment, and casinos started to appear throughout continental Europe in the 19th century.
In America there are three historical chapters tracing the presence of gam- bling, from the public lotteries of the colonial era, to New York casinos run by crime syndicates in the early twentieth century, to the rise of gambling as a legitimate industry in Nevada and Atlantic City in the 1940s and 50s.
These country bumpkins roamed the gambling floor and watched some of the free entertainment on our last day in Sin City.
