A conversation I had yesterday with a friend at the local Golden Arches...
I have determined the best things to eat with coffee. For me: Bacon... Where's the bacon? Nothing beats skillet fried bacon straight out of bed in the morning with a pot freshly brewed coffee. Do yourself a favor, fry up some bacon, brew your coffee, and set yourself a plate of scrambled eggs with cheese, just how Momma used to make. Mmm-mmm-mmm, good ol’ Americana coming right at ya.
Sip your coffee first. You want to acclimate your tongue to the coffee, not to the food. Then take a bite of the bacon. Let the pork juices wet your mouth with the heaviest flavor first.
Right as you swallow take a sip of coffee. Notice how the bacon pulls out flavors in the coffee you couldn’t detect before.
You want to let the bolder flavors interact with your tongue first and then let the milder ones add to the new coffee profile: crisp, balanced, and unapologetically meaty. It’s weird to think of your coffee as having a “meat” flavor. But that’s the only word I know to describe it: sort of a heavy mouth feel instead of a light or bitter or acidic taste to it. I loved using a good flavored sauce like 57 sause after the meat, with say some potatoes, because it really takes the coffee in a new direction. Whereas before, it might be too acidic for me, now it tastes more balanced and clean. Finally, fork the scramble on top of some butter-smeared toast and take a bite big enough that makes it impossible not to chew with your mouth open. That is if you are at home... There it can be just you & your breakfast so you can be free & wild!
Take a sip. Watch your flavor ascend into heaven as you unlock the final flavor—savory mellowness.
Some will grasp muffins, cinnamon bun, all the breakfast delights but, my second top favorite, don't get between me and this mouth joy is "Milk Chocolate".
It doesn't have to be a large piece. Just a nibble like a Hershey Kiss will do.
Hold it under your tongue for a small sip of hot coffee. Allow the melt moment, Swallow in silent bliss... Repeat!
Yes it can be a ritual.
Sometimes I look forward to the long day and this is my treat. Other times I will take it on the road with me as it helps to relax me.
Now days it's a cup of decaffeinated coffee so I'm not glassy eyes awake at midnight or make five trips to the bathroom. It's a small price for flavor bliss.
However, my favorite third in favorite coffee and food combinations is indeed
the sweet pastry with the coffee.
So, yah I'm back to breakfast foods.
Okay, a great suggestion for those of you that are vegetarians... I am told that you can fry coconut flakes to mimic the bacon taste and fry tofu to copy the scrambled eggs. I would also throw in one of these "Korean" mushrooms if you can find it.
I understand it, those oyster mushrooms really satisfy the bacon craving when fried to a caramel perfection.
Anyway you slice it, coffee can be a delightful treat with your favorite tastes of choice.
Now I gotta go find me a cup of coffee...
