1/28/2021 Things You Knew About Missouri...

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

Leave it to Missourians to understand these...

1. Kansas City is actually in Missouri...

Despite its name, the larger, more famous Kansas City is actually in Missouri, not Kansas. Out-of-Staters are likely to find this utterly shocking. To them, it just won’t make sense.

2. The state bird should be a cardinal

While the state bird is a bluebird, that doesn’t stop our state’s avid pride in all things cardinal. The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the most dominating teams in Major League Baseball in recent decades, earning them plenty of love in the “Show Me State.”

I only own a twenty one or more things with the Cardinals logo.

3. Missouri Is Full Of Royalty

If we Missourian aren’t cheering for the Cards, we’ll probably be backing the Kansas City Royals. While the team might not have come out on top in their most recent World Series appearance, it’s a sure bet that the Royals will keep winning games for years to come.

4. Royalty Isn’t Restricted To Just Sports

Next time a Budweiser is cracked open, thank Missouri. Without Adolphus Busch of St. Louis creating the King of Beers in 1876, America would never have been introduced to its favorite brewski.

5. The Arch Isn’t Solid Stone

When many out-of-Staters see the most dominating feature of the St. Louis skyline, they usually assume that the arch is simply a solid monument. They’ll be shocked when they realize it’s possible to take a ride all the way to the top inside of this giant thing. And... I can confess the view is Spectacular!

6. Pop Vs. Soda, Pick A Side

There’s a hot debate going on across the entire country with regards to what a soft drink should be called. Missouri is the epicenter of this argument, with people in the eastern half of the state calling this carbonated, sugary drink “soda”, while those in the west call it “pop.” For years I just call it " Soda Pop"! 😅

7. The Weather Doesn’t Listen...

Weather in Missouri tends to get a bit wacky. It can be rainy one moment, then sunny, shortly followed by snow. Because it’s so crazy, make sure an out-of-Stater is always prepared for anything. Heck... at one time I carried a portable snow shovel with me in all my vehicles. 🤣

8. Our Own Pizzas...

St. Louis pizza is a one-of-a-kind dish thanks to Provel cheese, a combination of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone. While this topping is extremely popular in the St. Louis area, it can rarely be found elsewhere. This is a Missouri-must. I love any kind of pizza. Bring it! 😍

9. Some Things Taste Good Burnt...

While burning food is often considered a bad thing, burnt ends are one of the most popular barbecue dishes in this area of the country. They’re some of the most flavorful pieces around, cut from the fatty point half of a smoked brisket.

Boone's BBQ here in Bolivar has some of the best I've ever had. Ya gotta try them!

10. Don’t Diss The Barbecue

In fact Missouri has the best barbecue in the country, known for our slow-smoked meats and thick sauces. Kansas City, Mo. alone has over 100 barbecue restaurants, each with its own unique taste. What do you think the KC in KC Masterpiece stands for, anyway? And...

Yes I actually have had dinner with the owner of of KC Masterpiece BBQ but we did not eat BBQ. 😂

11. It’s Not That Springfield...

It might burst a bubble of some Simpsons fans, but after lots of debate through the years, Matt Groening, the creator of everyone’s favorite cartoon family, finally admitted in an interview that the Springfield featured in his show was based on the one found in Oregon, not Missouri.

12. Bring Your Earplugs To Arrowhead

When it comes to football, Missouri is torn between the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Rams. However, if an out-of-Stater is headed to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City for a game, make sure that they’re ready to witness one of the loudest, craziest sporting events around. This stadium set the record for loudest crowd ever one September as fans reached 142.2 decibels, the equivalent of standing 164 feet down the runway from a jet.

13. Watch Out For Flying Rolls

After getting its start in Sikeston, MO, Lambert’s Café has become famous for throwing dinner rolls to their customers. The rolls are delicious, but make sure you bring your A-game. The 5-second rule still applies. A catcher's mask would not hurt either. 😄

14. Roads Turn Orange In The Summer

Missouri officials seem to use the warm summer months as an excuse to finish all repairs to the state before winter hits. That being said, if an out-of-Stater is driving around Missouri, they can expect plenty of construction cones on the roadways.

15. Deep Fried Pasta Is A Thing

A favorite appetizer across St. Louis, fried ravioli is exactly what it sounds like: ravioli that’s stuffed with meat and dropped in the fryer. An out-of-towner may find imitators across the country, but St. Louis is the only place to find an authentic version of this dish.

16. You Don’t Need A Boat To Float

A famous past time in the Show Me State, “floating” is the one sport that is perfect for any level of athlete. It basically consists of sitting on an inner tube, drinking beer, and slowly drifting down a peaceful creek. If an out-of-Stater is visiting during a warmer month, make sure they get dragged along on at least one float trip.

17. Is it “ee”, or Sometimes Its “uh?”

The people of Missouri can’t really agree on the correct way to pronounce their own name. Even politicians get caught switching back and forth between Missour-ee and Missour-ah during their local speeches in an attempt to please everyone. A quick rule of thumb to go by is that Missour-uh is used closer to Kansas City and Missour-ee is more of a St. Louis thing.

18. Missourians ❤️ Their Show And Tell

The “Show Me State” isn’t technically the official nickname of Missouri, but through frequent use over the years, it’s become widely known. While there are several stories about how this nickname came about, one popular story involves a politician’s response to a long winded statement, in which he said “I’m from Missouri, you have got to show me,” implying that words alone were not enough for him.

19. We Tend To Go Look

It’s no secret that serious tornados frequent Missouri. While this might be a terrifying fact for out-of-Staters, when the sirens sound many Missourians prefer to head outside with a beer in hand to watch the storm roll in.

20. Cuba Is Closer Than You Think

Missourians don’t need any sort of special arrangement to visit Cuba. Cuba, Missouri, that is. With around 3,000 people, the tiny town of Cuba is worth a visit, even if it’s just for bragging rights.

21. Paris Makes A Great Day Trip, Too

Smaller than Cuba with only 1,200 residents, Missouri is also home to a town named Paris. It might not be home to a giant Eiffel Tower, but a vacation to this Paris instead of the one in France is sure to save a few bucks.

22. MO Has Mark Twain Pride.

Born in Florida, Missouri, Mark Twain became one of the most famous American writers ever. It seems as if every small town has a story about Twain and usually some sort of building or statue named after him.

23. Disney Didn’t Start In Florida

While Florida is now known worldwide for its involvement with Disney feature films, Walt Disney got his creative start as a youngster growing up in Missouri, after a neighbor sparked an interest in drawing. You can even visit Walt’s original studio in Kansas City!

24. Cornhole Isn’t A Place To Shove It

In Missouri, cornhole is a popular lawn game in which players toss bags filled with dried corn back and forth in attempt to land them on a wooden board, ultimately hoping that the bag will end up falling through a hole in the center of their target.

25. MO Is Spelled With A Couple “Z”s

Out-of-Staters tend to think that Mizzou is different than the University of Missouri. Nope. It’s the same school, out-of-Staters. You can use these two names interchangeably.

26. Caves, Everywhere

It’s not surprising that another nickname for Missouri is the Cave State. It’s home to over 6,000 discovered caves. We make sure out-of-Staters know about cave safety before they go exploring.

27. Frog Legs Here

Another popular pastime in Missouri is hunting frogs, also known as frog gigging. All that’s really required is a multi-prong spear, some hand-eye coordination, and a keen eye for frogs basking in the moonlight.

28. Tractors Rule The Roads

If there’s a traffic jam in rural Missouri, it probably means that there’s a tractor somewhere up ahead moving very slowly. Missouri isn’t just St. Louis and Kansas City. In fact, most of the state is farmland. While farmers try not to block roads, sometimes they just can’t help it.

29. Missouri Isn’t Typical Flyover State

Missouri often gets lumped in with the rest of the Midwest as just another flyover state. This couldn’t be more wrong. A unique blend of big cities and small town life, Missouri truly has something for everyone. With the beautiful Ozarks, awesome sports teams, and some delicious food, the Show Me State is definitely worth exploring. Come On Over To My Annual " Ozark Mountains Gathering (OMG) Best otorcycle touring of our great State!
