Today is rest for the dogs and I...
As the saying states "Just let Sleep Dogs Lie." That is my motto today!
Do you ever wonder where that saying came from?
One theory is that it stems from Geoffrey Chaucer's poem Troilus and Criseyde, published in 1374. It seems like it was used in French even earlier in the 14th century, in Proverbia Vulgalia et Latina, where the saying is: “Ne reveillez pas le chien qui dort.” Translation: Do not wake the dog that sleeps.
Others say probably well before that. In fact, one may consider the roots of this proverb to be in the Old Testament of the Bible, in the book of Proverbs, chapter twenty-six, verse seventeen: “He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.” Even with its ancient origins, the proverb let sleeping dogs lie is quite popular today.
The phrase “let sleeping dogs lie” is a reminder not to bring unnecessary risk or danger upon oneself. The saying originates from the idea that waking a sleeping dog was dangerous, especially if done suddenly. This applies to an even greater extent to guard dogs who once awoken would likely attack. The phrase has also come to apply to a vast swath of situations in which one might poke something that’s better left alone.
At any rate... these sleeping dog will lie undisturbed as long as possible. 😏
I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
